The 5th South East Asian Muslim Student Delegates Conference comes to Columbus, July 1-3, 1994.

The purpose of this conference is to provide Muslim scholars and students of South East Asian origin, studying in the U. S., with a constructive and meaningful intellectual platform where they can exchange ideas and formulate solutions to regional problems facing the Muslim Ummah in South East Asia. Topics include:

• How to make functional the basic religious as well as cultural values so that the Ummah can keep up with the demand of modem life. Under-education, under-utilization of Muslim women, and underdevelopment of social solidarity will be addressed.

• In politics and Shariah, practical Islamic strategies are needed that will be instrumental in encouraging more general participation in policy making. Collaborative ventures between religious scholars and formal leaders in the form of Islamic judicial offices like in Indonesia will be discussed.

• In Economy, issues of Islamic banking, distribution of Islamic charity, and generally improving the role of Muslims in the regional economy will be examined.

• In Science and Technology, issues and problems will be addressed related to the extent to which Muslim Ummah can and should make the best use of the existing technology to improve the quality of life. Improved communication between Muslim scientists and scholars is needed also.
